back to your roots

On Friday, I caught Who Do You Think You Are on NBC with Sarah Jessica Parker. If you haven't seen the show, basically, these celebrities (one per show) work with genealogists and ancestry experts to explore their family history and to find out more about themselves. They travel to different locales and visit the places where their family lived.

I was glued to the TV! I find ancestry fascinating. When I was little, my dad's side of the family had a family member that moved to a town where there was a large genealogy library. She put together a huge index of research back to the 1700s! It has photos, copies of articles, and even interviews. I remember flipping through the book and reading it line by line.

Of course, Ancestry.com was a huge sponsor of the show, and it motivated me to sign up. It was probably the incessant brainwashing at every commercial break. My dad's birthday is coming up soon and I think I'm going to make him a family tree book or poster, since he's interested in this stuff too. The site is really neat - they even have scanned copies of census data and records! Especially interesting for a geek like me.

I love that show too! I can't wait to for the next show. Oprah did a half hour segment on the show this week and it was so COOL. My dad is into all the family history stuff. I just wished I had a job that would allow me to spend a day or two a week researching.

I taped that show and loved it! One of my mom's cousins did an extensive project for their side of the family but I would love to do my own research!

I really like the idea of the show. Did you know that it has been running on Public access for a while? I didn't apparently my husband has been watching it and was confused that it was picked up by a network!

@KatieSPerk actually, that is a completely different show, not the same one, isn't sponsored by Ancestry.com, etc - that one is more based on DNA sampling and genome research. It's hosted by an African-American man who is very up there in age - the celebs have fewer segments involved.

This other show is nice, as they actually show photos of family members, travel to places WITH the family members, etc

Oh Ive been meaning to see that. There is also some gene testing where you give a swab of the inside of your cheek and supposedly they can track your ancestry!

I DVR'd that show and can't wait to watch it; they're also airing a similar show on PBS right now. Geneaology is suddenly super cool!

I missed the SJP episode but I just watched it on HULU. I've got a new respect for SJP - she's WASPy! And the episode about her husband Matthew Broderick looks equally interesting!
